{"id":278,"date":"2023-11-10T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/volkanartz.w23.fr\/?p=278"},"modified":"2026-05-21T11:48:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T10:48:36","slug":"making-of-lecriture-selon-dostoievsky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/volkanartz.chauss.in\/en\/making-of-lecriture-selon-dostoievsky\/","title":{"rendered":"Making of : Dostoyevsky writes !"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performing arts are ephemeral by nature.\nOne rehearses and prepares oneself, the theater company builds up the show, acts and gets away\u2026 and when everything is over, one feels very bluesy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En ajoutant a cette dynamique traditionnelle l&#8217;\u00e9preuve d&#8217;un spectacle au bord de l&#8217;annulation (au lendemain des attentats de Paris), un public forc\u00e9ment clairsem\u00e9 et une facture bien sal\u00e9e, cela laisse une impression \u00e9trange &#8211; surtout quand le metteur en sc\u00e8ne est venu sp\u00e9cialement de Russie pour l\u2019occasion !&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway : if Life is playing one of its old tricks with us, let's be playful !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do we have at reach ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A senior actor, with lots of capabilities and the desire to act again. He's a real fan of Dostoyevsky's and even shares his beard shape !<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another actor, who's just out of a Dostoyevskian theater show<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costumes and decorations, in the nineteenth century style<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quelques jours et de l&#8217;\u00e9nergie \u00e0 revendre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo camera<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A theme and an idea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theme consisted in interrogating the way Literature is built. How does the author work ? How does he (or she) use the personnel experience ? How can the author transform what he\/she sees around him\/her ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dostoyevsky's own journal, he found his idea for the story \"The Gentle Woman\" (which we adapted to the stage) by reading in the newspapers the news of a young girl, jumping out of a window, holding firmly an icon while passing through\u2026.&nbsp;<br>You know, in the XIXth century, that was no small thing : suicide was then called self murder and was condemned by the church. The fact that this young woman jumps out the window holding this icon is therefore quite striking, as it expresses the paradoxical importance of faith for this person.&nbsp;<br>Voici de quoi alimenter la r\u00e9flexion et stimuler l\u2019imagination d\u2019un \u00e9crivain port\u00e9 sur la psychologie : qu&#8217;est-ce qui pourrait pousser une telle personne \u00e0 un tel acte ? Quelles sont les circonstances qui pourraient le justifier ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous savons \u00e9galement que Dosto\u00efevski a perdu sa premi\u00e8re \u00e9pouse ; il conna\u00eet donc les \u00e9tats d\u2019\u00e2mes, qui surviennent la nuit d\u2019apr\u00e8s. (Il s\u2019agit d&#8217;ailleurs pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment de la situation du personnage principal de &#8220;Krotkaia&#8221; &#8211; toute l\u2019action se d\u00e9roulant sur cette premi\u00e8re \u00ab\u00a0 nuit d\u2019apr\u00e8s\u00a0\u00bb).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enfin, nous savons que de nombreux autres th\u00e8mes du r\u00e9cit ont des liens \u00e9troits avec la vie de l&#8217;auteur : Dosto\u00efevski a connu la g\u00eane, avec les allers-retours r\u00e9guliers au moins de Pi\u00e9t\u00e9, pour y laisser des objets en gage ; son incompatibilit\u00e9 de caract\u00e8re avec l\u2019arm\u00e9e le conduisit lui-aussi \u00e0 la quitter ; il connut le contraste entre les bonnes mani\u00e8res nobiliaires et la vie dans les bas fonds (notamment en camp de prisonnier en Sib\u00e9rie, au c\u00f4t\u00e9 du peuple)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous avons donc imagin\u00e9 un sc\u00e9nario : comment l\u2019auteur per\u00e7oit-il le monde qui l&#8217;entoure et dans quelle mesure puise-t-il dans son exp\u00e9rience personnelle, pour transformer tout cela en litt\u00e9rature ?<br>Quite obviously, this would need at least 20 to 25 minutes to develop to a good level - but who would promote such a project ?<br>Je n\u2019avais moi-m\u00eame aucune exp\u00e9rience de jeu cin\u00e9matographique et Amvrosyi Svetlogorskyi s&#8217;en \u00e9tait coup\u00e9 depuis le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We somewhat needed a \"pilot\" short movie, to try out our idea. Did it have any potential ? Could one believe in it ? What would be its artistic and emotional capacities ?<br>Nous savions bien qu&#8217;en quelques minutes, nous ne pourrions pas aller tr\u00e8s loin, mais nous pensions qu&#8217;il serait tout de m\u00eame possible d\u2019\u00e9voquer les choses et de cr\u00e9er une atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alors, \u00e0 Dieu va : nous \u00e9crivons quelques sc\u00e8nes sans paroles (certes nourries par des r\u00e9flexions de longue date), notamment celles o\u00f9 Dosto\u00efevski \u00e9crit et c&#8217;est parti !\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dostoievsky&#039;s writing - L&#039;\u00e9criture, selon D.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CvxGc2KE0Io?start=24&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Core principles<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> :<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J\u2019avais suivi une petite formation sur la question du montage et de la colorim\u00e9trie, au cours de laquelle le formateur affirmait que toutes les cam\u00e9ras (y compris les appareils photos) se valaient globalement et qu\u2019on pouvait faire beaucoup avec peu (surtout avec de bonnes conditions d&#8217;\u00e9clairage de la sc\u00e8ne). Dans le m\u00eame esprit, Werner Herzog dans sa masterclass affirmait : il ne faut pas attendre que toutes les conditions soient r\u00e9unies, sinon on ne fait pas et on apprend jamais rien !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely in this perspective that we worked on this project : we were full of enthusiasm , we had two actors (one of them benefiting from experience in the cinema), with an interesting theme\u2026 As for the rest of the equation, let's just begin and improvise !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gear we had at hand :<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A basic photo camera (Panasonic GF7), with no manual control in video mode and capable of shooting \"only\" in HQ (no 4K)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two lenses : a 12-45 and a 90-150&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One large diaphragm microphone (designed for recording singers in home studios), with one home studio analog to digital converter, linked to a computer\u2026 That wasn't precisely easy to move the whole thing around\u2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Un \u00e9clairage d&#8217;ambiance et une lampe halog\u00e8ne pour les accents, de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 compl\u00e9ter les bougies, qui figureront dans le cadre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a word : all of this was quite ill-adapted, but - once again - we wanted to do with what we had\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways, the cinema is like live theatre : one has to cope with problems all the time. I believe that, even in Hollywood productions, well produced and prepared, there are quite a few handymen that have to fix everything which goes awry (let's remind the Babylon movie, just for fun)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Globally, it was interesting and quite amusing to gather experience about the laws for the movies :&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Image composition -&gt; when one doesn't know, lets try the rule of thirds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Importance du decorum\u2026 dans le cadre et juste dans le cadre. Ce qui est en dehors, on s\u2019en fout. Ou comment cr\u00e9er l\u2019impression d\u2019un espace, alors qu\u2019on a juste un coin d&#8217;un appartement&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lighting : we already had experience from the scenic theater, but we could add an interesting touch, with the candles and some contrast between the highlights and shadows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sound : we did some recording on the spot, but also some voice over and even post synchronizing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Color grading<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Set design<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let's talk about decorations : what to do when you live in a flat from the 60s ? Luckily, at that time, they installed wooden floors. We also had some props from the theater show. That is why we chose to shoot in close-ups, and most of the time from overhead (bird's eye)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We shot this way : the metallic bowl, the pair of ankle boots, but also a close up on a door frame, the old table (that we had ordered specifically for the theater show) and other typical items.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the contrary, the final shot on Dostoyevsky, bottom viewed and with a lot of depth of field, gave us headaches !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Red and the Black<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The color was a hell of an issue !&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En effet, nous avions d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de travailler avec une atmosph\u00e8re aussi proche que possible de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, avec des bougies et des lumi\u00e8res compl\u00e9mentaires. Sauf que les bougies et les halog\u00e8nes , c&#8217;est tr\u00e8s jaune ! \u00c7a, c\u2019\u00e9tait l\u2019id\u00e9e, sauf que dans la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d&#8217;une technologie et dans ces conditions de lumi\u00e8re, les cam\u00e9ras ont tendance \u00e0 tirer sur le rouge.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I figured it out, in post, that was a fucking nightmare ! I really had to get back to more classic tones, but I didn't have any white balance nor reference\u2026 That was quite a lesson ! I had to judge subjectively - but you know, one can handle quite a lot this way !\nThe other thing is that, when you shoot in the yellow to reds, you loose all the blue and even green information - and that is just  impossible to recover in post. Without any sound, the image would appear artificial. An easy experience is to mute the sound in any movie : it appears very strange and factitious instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mais pire encore, pour le n\u00e9gatif, donc : si le son est mauvais, il est tout simplement impossible de regarder un film jusqu\u2019au bout (et cela vaut m\u00eame pour une dur\u00e9e de 3 minutes). Imaginez un souffle significatif, un gr\u00e9sillement, ou pire encore : une saturation lorsque les personnages parlent ! C\u2019est en cela que le son joue a 50%. Pour finir, Werner Herzog \u00e9voque ses premiers projets, r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en groupe d&#8217;apprentis r\u00e9alisateurs passionn\u00e9s : sur 10 projets, 8 n\u2019ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 aboutis et ce, a cause de probl\u00e8mes de son !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video below (an advertisement for TASCAM) is quite funny and express those issues quite clearly (the first and last 30 seconds are worth it) : <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TASCAM DR-60D Recorder for DSLR Filmmakers\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mLUxfp1kTDA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En l\u2019occurrence, notre matos n\u2019\u00e9tait certes pas vraiment adapt\u00e9 a la prise de son cin\u00e9ma, mais il ne gr\u00e9sillait pas non plus. Comme nous filmions en conditions stationnaires (un peu comme dans un studio), il \u00e9tait possible d&#8217;utiliser un matos difficile \u00e0 trimballer. Une fois encore : vive la d\u00e9brouille !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the contrary, we had real problems with the scene at the door. I had been able to act in Russian for the scene with the bowl, but I couldn't get that other one, at the door, up to our satisfaction. So we decided instead to shoot it in French, and then turn it to Russian through post synchronization.&nbsp;<br>What a nightmare again !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On raconte que Stanley Kubrick a rencontr\u00e9 d&#8217;\u00e9normes probl\u00e8mes, lors de la production de son premier long m\u00e9trage : &#8220;Fear and desire&#8221;. Il s&#8217;est r\u00e9solu \u00e0 tout doubler en post production.\u00a0<br>Funeste d\u00e9cision : compte tenu des attentes du public occidental, vis-\u00e0-vis de la synchronisation des paroles au mouvement des l\u00e8vres, l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience s&#8217;est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e ahurissante de difficult\u00e9 en post-production\u2026 A ce qu&#8217;on raconte, donc, il aurait bien failli abandonner en route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les sovi\u00e9tiques avaient une autre convention du son : ce qui surprend dans les films de l&#8217;\u00e9poque sovi\u00e9tique, c&#8217;est le silence : il n&#8217;y a pas de bruit de fond ! Tout \u00e9tait doubl\u00e9 en studio, post tournage. C&#8217;est ainsi qu&#8217;il \u00e9tait possible de faire tourner, par exemple dans le fameux film &#8220;l&#8217;ironie du destin&#8221;, une actrice ne parlant pas (ou pas assez bien) le russe, pour la doubler ensuite par une russophone &#8211; et \u00e7a passe cr\u00e8me ! (du reste, les acteurs sovi\u00e9tiques disposaient d&#8217;une technique de jeu beaucoup plus solide que les acteurs occidentaux).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On raconte de m\u00eame que, dans la tradition du cin\u00e9ma italien des ann\u00e9es 60-70, on doublait tout en post production. Et c&#8217;\u00e9tait apparemment la cacophonie sur le plateau &#8211; pas \u00e9vident pour se concentrer, pour les acteurs am\u00e9ricains, qui venaient faire un tour par la cin\u00e8citta. En outre, cela permettait aux r\u00e9alisateurs de brailler leurs indications aux com\u00e9diens durant les prises\u2026\u00a0<br>Personnellement, j&#8217;aime bien cette technique (en tant que com\u00e9dien ou en direction d&#8217;acteur), car elle permet d&#8217;adapter le jeu en temps r\u00e9el &#8211; mais certains d\u00e9testent \u00e7a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Anecdotes d&#8217;interpr\u00e9tation :<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La s\u00e9quence la plus efficace de ce petit film repose sur un malentendu, ou plut\u00f4t sur une exp\u00e9rience : l&#8217;effet Kouleshov !<br>Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une s\u00e9quence en \u00e9cho ; dans notre film :&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dostoyevsky opens a little box, which was over its writing table, and takes out of it a little piece of jewelry - which could have been one of the female character's<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut to the vision of the imaginary man, who observes the piece of jewelry as well<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Back to Dostoyevsky<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We actually got a few congratulations, about this very simple scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;un effet cin\u00e9matographique assez connu et exp\u00e9riment\u00e9 dans le cin\u00e9ma sovi\u00e9tique d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 20 (d&#8217;o\u00f9 le nom de son inventeur : Lief Kouleshoff).\u00a0<br>Il fonctionne gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&#8217;imagination du spectateur et aux transferts \u00e9motionnels. Port\u00e9 par l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re cr\u00e9\u00e9e plus t\u00f4t dans le film, le spectateur remplit de sentiments tout ce qu\u2019il voit &#8211; m\u00eame s&#8217;il s&#8217;agit en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de plans neutres.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alfred Hitchcock explains it very vividly :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hitchcock explique l&#039;effet Koulechov (vost) - 1964\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1qWlIYKeqPc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a real acting lesson for me : not to play anything ! Just looking at the jewel, while the camera does the job (with a slow follow focus from the eye of the man to the jewel itself).\u00a0<br>Good training !\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J&#8217;ai r\u00e9it\u00e9r\u00e9 l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience dans mon film suivant : &#8221; A Kurt To Be&#8221;, dans lequel je m&#8217;\u00e9tais efforc\u00e9 de ne rien jouer tout au long du film &#8211; sauf dans le plan final.
